Two Storey Extension and Building Makeover

Brief

BRD were asked to prepare a scheme to extend the clients home.  In particular, they required a large bedroom with en-suite bathroom, a guest suite at first floor, and a larger garage.  They also wanted to have a solution to the conservatory that was either too hot, or too cold.

Our solution

Our design solution is in three distinct parts.  We added a two storey front addition to the house, incorporating a new covered front porch and hallway.  This allowed us to extend an existing bedroom and create the required space, as well as create an attractive new front door and vestibule.

Our solution for the garage is a timber clad structure resembling a traditional outbuilding with a central feature gable.  The roof over this garage also covers an open carport and accomodates the guest suite.  The guest suite is accessed from an open staircase rising from the spectacular garden room.

The Garden Room is our solution to the conservatory.  It is a single storey addition with a vaulted room and exposed aok trusses. At the end of the room there is a set of folding doors that open onto a sitting area that is still under the protection of the vaulted roof.

The entire house was re-roofed with a plain tile and the render repainted in a suitable shade. The front extension and side extension are finished in dark painted feather edged boarding.

This use of vernacular materials and the introduction of traditional rural architectural features has created a new home that the clients are delighted with. The extended dwelling works very well as a family home and the new Garden Room can be enjoyed all year round.
